Sand House

chama sand house west 1995 tlhprn.jpg (98498 bytes)

Locomotives use sand at slippery spots on the tracks to provide friction between the steel wheels and rails. The Sand House is where the sand is dried and stored. Inside the structure there are drying bins that are often heated. Various methods were utilized to filter and dry the sand and then store it for use by the locomotives. Most Sand Houses had an accompanying elevated tower bin that held the clean dry sand up high so the locomotives could pull up and fill their sand domes by gravity from the tower.
